چکیده
We present a pilot study of extragalactic HI 21-cm absorption lines using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). observed 5 continuum sources with features firstly identified in 40% data release Arecibo Legacy Fast L-Band Feed Array (ALFA) Survey (ALFALFA), including two systems later detected by Westerbork Synthesis Radio (WSRT). Most our observations were carried out during FAST commissioning phase, and we have tested different observing modes, as well reduction methods, to produce best spectra. Our successfully confirmed existence all these systems, that marginally ALFALFA. fitted profiles single or double Gaussian functions, calculated column densities each source. The obtained show much higher spectral resolution S/N ratio than existing literature, thus demonstrating power revealing detailed structures lines. tests enabled us develop strategy search for from survey, which is one key projects undertaken at FAST. expect over 1,500 absorbing could be survey data, based on sensitivity level achieved observations.

Five-Hundred Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) Cable-Suspended Robot Model and Comparison with the Arecibo Observatory Arecibo, Puerto Rico Proposed FAST Observatory in China Observatorio
This paper first presents a comprehensive comparison of the established radio telescope near Arecibo, Puerto Rico vs. the designed Chinese Five-hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) that includes a six-degrees-of-freedom (dof) underconstrained cable-suspended robot to position and orient its focus cabin. Then a straight-line cable model is presented for the FAST robot kinematics and...
متن کاملGalaxy redshift surveys selected by neutral hydrogen using the Five-hundred metre Aperture Spherical Telescope
We discuss the possibility of performing a substantial spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey selected via the 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen using the Five-hundred metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) to be built in China. We consider issues related to the estimation of the source counts and optimizations of the survey, and discuss the constraints on cosmological models that such a sur...
متن کاملHI 21 cm - line observations with the GMRT towards interstellar clouds previously seen in optical absorption
We have made HI 21cm-line absorption measurements using the GMRT towards 15 directions in the Galaxy which are known to have high random velocity clouds as seen in the optical absorption lines of CaII and NaI. For the first time, in 6 out of these 15 directions we detect HI absorption features corresponding to the high random velocity optical absorption lines. The mean optical depth of these de...
متن کاملOn Measuring Accurate 21 Cm Line Profiles with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope
We use observational data to show that 21 cm line profiles measured with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) are subject to significant inaccuracy. These include ∼10% errors in the calibrated gain and significant contribution from distant sidelobes. In addition, there are ∼60% variations between the GBT and Leiden/Argentine/Bonn 21 cm line profile intensities, which probably occur because of the hig...
متن کاملThe 21 cm Forest: Radio Absorption Spectra as a Probe of the Intergalactic Medium Before Reionization
We study the absorption along lines of sight toward high-z radio sources caused by the 21 cm transition of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) before reionization. Using semi-analytic methods, we compute the number density of observable features caused by both “minihalos” (bound objects that are unable to cool efficiently because of their small virial temperatures) and protogalac...
